History of Summit Camp

Summit Camp was founded in 1969 by Mayer and Ninette Stiskin, at the time, owner/operators of the Summit Schools of New York City. Originally purchased to become the ‘brother’ half of the brother/sister Rose Lake Camps, Mayer and Ninette saw an opportunity for this camp facility to become something wholly different- a place for the very children and teens in their schools to call a camp of their own. Thus, taking from the title of their budding school programs, Summit Camp for boys and girls with learning differences held its first summer season.

With its roots in special education and learning support programs, Summit has always pursued professional growth. Summit also became a member of the American Camp Association, rising to the standards of that body and retaining membership in ACA for decades. Summit has developed programs and curriculum which have been modeled by other programs in helping our youth to have fun and find success in a recreational environment. Summit continues to engage actively in both the camp and special needs communities, endeavoring to bring our participants the best in therapeutic recreation, social learning, and personal development. Summit’s camp, travel, and weekender programs have thus provided our kids and teens with a community and tradition that they are proud to call their own- and we are honored to continue.
