| Summit Keeps in Touch... Every Night! |
|
Here is a note sent to us recently by one of our families:
"Thank you for your newsletters, in particular last night's newsletter. Before reading the newsletter, I was newly determined not to allow myself to have my head in the sand. I was sure that things couldn't be nearly as smooth as Samantha's letters, and the phone call last Sunday from her unit leader, made it seem. No one had EVER used the word "easy" about my girl before; no one had ever described her as "a dream". I was bound and determined - when the next phone call from Samantha's unit leader came, I would insist that we thoroughly hash every bump that Samantha may have had. I would find out how she was REALLY doing. Because I am constantly trying to figure out when to give her support, and when to let her try to swim on her own. Does she really need a special needs camp? If things are truly so smooth, maybe we can try a music camp next year.
Your newsletter was an important reminder for me - to keep my denial at bay. Of course there are bumps. The gift of Camp Summit is that the bumps don't derail and define her. This is my daughter's first time at camp. When I first started receiving the newsletter, I thought to myself that they would be useless - how could a newsletter meant for every parent of every camper possibly meet my need to know how MY girl was doing? I want you to know that every single newsletter has managed to do just that, by finding the universal in the everyday. You have not only managed to give me a sense that I know how my camper is doing, you also manage to help me understand my own process as a parent, of loving and letting go. Someone has to help me with this or she'll never go to college!" In addition to the newsletter we also post more than 250 photos from camp as well, and there are frequent phone calls between our camp staff and our families. Communication is always key. Summit Camp provides a summer camp experience for boys and girls, ages 7-17, who have issues of attention. These may include Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD and/or ADHD), Asperger’s syndrome, verbal or non-verbal learning disabilities, and/or mild social or emotional concerns Some of our campers may also have Tourette’s syndrome, O.C.D., and /or mild mood issues. Summit Travel works with older children, ages 15-19, who have similar issues.
